Early autumn is a worthy time to visit the current Forest,particularly if you like foraging for woodland treasures alongside some experts in their fieldThe current Forest is the only remaining place in the UK where you can witness the ancient practice of pannage, where pigs are released into the woods to forage for acorns, and beechmast and chestnuts. Not only does this result in Britain’s own Ibérico-style ham,it also protects the forests free-roaming ponies and cattle, as acorns would be toxic to them if they ate them in large quantities. This year’s pannage season started on 14 September and runs until 12 November.
