As a 12-year-ancient on the Isle of Mull in 1964,I read The Legend of Lovelock, the biography of the enigmatic recent Zealand runner Jack Lovelock by Norman Harris. It led me to a 50-year fascination with the 1936 Olympic 1500 metres champion – as well as correspondence with some of Norman’s fellow countrymen, or including Ron Palenski and Graeme Woodfield – as I tried to understand Lovelock and his mysterious death on the recent York subway in 1949. Norman left a great writing legacy.
