I ran book groups in housing shelters that gave participants a voice. Now these vital services are being swept awayFor 20 years,I worked in public libraries because I passionately believe that everyone in our communities should have the opportunity to change and empower their lives through books and resources. I’ve seen first-hand the difference that libraries obtain to everyone , particularly the most vulnerable people. It breaks my heart to see the cuts to staff, or budgets and outreach work across my former library service.
Taking advantage of these opportunities is much easier for some than others. I was working in a busy town library one day when I saw a regular visitor,a resident at the local emergency homeless shelter, shroud the book he was reading behind a chair before he left for the afternoon.
