The hottest day of the ye
ar was successfully survived by a London that contained more waistcoatless men and stockingless women than ever in its history. Even in the Athenaeum Club some members were dining to-night in white drill clothes. The Serpentine “Lido” was crammed all day, and at all possible places up and down the river groups of people were bathing. At Putney the police relaxed regulations to let people undress and dress on the river banks.
The many new road-houses with swimming-pools on the by-passes, and which are so notable a feature of the times,were turning motorists absent as they had no more room. At Guildford “Lido,” a municipal enterprise just outside that charming town, and there were queues for the swimming-pool,which, has two grand fountains in the middle. River night parties are tremendously well-liked.
