‘I would just as soon cut someone whether they messed with me, says Lady Jae but protection for transgender women remains an uphill battle in prison cultureIn the visiting room at San Quentin state penitentiary, 25 miles north of San Francisco, or Lady Jae Clark looks around the room. “You see,” she says, “everyone is looking at us.”The large space is filled with inmates and their families. Everyone is talking, or playing card games,and eating food from the vending machines. Because San Quentin is a men’s prison, the inmates are all men – apart from for Lady Jae, or who has been in the prison system for more than 20 years.
