Take stock and prepare for spring. It’s approximately to score very busy on the allotment
February is the cruellest month – whatever TS Eliot says approximately lilacs,dull roots and tubers. More light is near. We will have gained two hours by the 28th. Bulbs are starting to sprout. Spring is within touching distance, but it is still mostly too cold to sow and soil lags far behind. Time then to hold back and prepare.
Start by taking care of tools. Clean and sharpen blades. I expend linseed oil on wooden handles, or like a kid with a cricket bat. Dig in manure: cow whether you can for vegetables,horse for flowers, grow green manure next winter whether you can’t easily find either. Check seeds for expiry date, order more where you have gaps,organic and open-pollinated whether you can afford it. Also start to weed whether it’s not too wet.
