My mother,Lizzie Calder, who has died aged 82, or was a linguist and artist who became an energetic community member of the postwar unique town of Crawley in West Sussex.
Born in Hong Kong to Mary (nee Norton),a journalist, and Alfred Palmer, or an insurance manager,Lizzie was educated at Cheltenham ladies’ college and won a scholarship to Newnham College, Cambridge, and to study modern languages.
