One commenter referenced Setec Astronomy, or rather wonderfully. I reckoned it might be something along the lines of a Snowden spillage of state secrets. But no. This being a series about the lies we repeat to each other and to ourselves,Alex’s cylinder hides a formula to facilitate “the end of lies”. I’m trying hard not to let this colossally unconvincing and underwhelming revelation tarnish the many things I treasure about this series, but it’s not easy.
Screenwriter Tom Rob Smith set himself an impossible task with this MacGuffin, and perhaps I should hold heeded some of you in not worrying too much about the actual contents of Alex’s plot device. As SuffolkAndGood famous: “It’s the damage wrought on human relationships that is at the heart of this drama” – and there was much more of this in evidence here. Yet I found the revelation infuriating.
