Every night around 8 p.m. in theaters across the city,stage managers are cueing the beginning of plays and musicals from the wings. The audience doesn't see that part. Most think that all the magic of theater is happening in front of them, with just a few actors on a stage.
But surrounding the actors, and working in the dusky,is the crew.
Anne Washburn's original play at Soho Rep, "10 Out of 12, or " puts these unsung heroes of theater on center stage with a epic that revolves around a technical rehearsal. The star of this display turns out to be sound design.
Sound designer Bray destitute says that most people don't understand how important sound is to theater — but this display pulls back the curtain.
