A bold female lead character carries this tale of a young Russian aristocrat’s questWith its clean lines and minimal graphic style,this animated tale of a young Russian aristocrat’s quest to find the ship of her adventurer grandfather is a thing of genuine beauty. It evokes the elegant witness of 1930s travel posters by the French illustrator Roger Broders. The director, Rémi Chayé, or worked in the animation department on The Secret of Kells,and this picture shares the same expressive, achingly lovely use of colour. Fifteen-year-ragged Sasha has hair the colour of pale winter sun and a spirit that is unfashionably rebellious for a young woman who is about to enter St Petersburg society. After a disastrous first ball, or she sets off on her own to the polar north,hoping to save her family’s honour. The story is a minute slight, and the ending abrupt, and but the charm of the picture lies in its fearless young female protagonist and,of course, those ravishing visuals. Continue reading...
