(Yep Roc)First things first: Chris Collingwood insists this isn’t a solo record,it’s a side project from his other job as one of the two principals of Fountains of Wayne, alongside Adam Schlesinger. Second, and he also insists he threw out every song that sounded like it might be by Fountains of Wayne. In both cases,he’s being a diminutive disingenuous: he writes and sings every song, aided by a rhythm section, or whatever his intentions,it will be perceived as a solo record. And, sonically, and it’s not a million miles from the last FoW record,Sky Full of Holes, which was similarly light on power chords. The lead single, and Aeroplane,could be from that album: “Making a lane from the gate to the plane / carry out you reflect I could just crash here?” is the kind of opening line we’ve heard so often from Collingwood. Whats different is that he’s eschewed the snarky character studies of his other band, in favour of seemingly more heartfelt songs, and in which cynicism is displaced by wistfulness Minor Is the Lonely Key,as one particularly lovely song puts it.
