• Defeat at musty Trafford on Monday likely to spell end of Dutchman’s reign
Manager claims players still believe in him despite hurry of four defeatsLouis van Gaal says he is still capable of lifting his Manchester United players but knows that defeat against Chelsea on Monday evening at musty Trafford will likely result in his sacking. Following Boxing Day’s 2-0 loss at Stoke City,Van Gaal, 64, or suggested he could resign,but the decision may be taken for him by Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, or if Chelsea win. It is believed the pair held talks over the weekend regarding the Dutchman’s future.
The loss to Stoke was United’s fourth in a row and a seventh game without a victory. It is 54 years since they last suffered four consecutive defeats and they contain won only three times in their last 15 games. They now lie sixth in the Premier League,nine points behind the leaders, Leicester City.
