The Senate has handed the Turnbull government a double-dissolution trigger,setting the scene for the longest election campaign in decades. Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed to reporters in Canberra he would go to the governor-general after the budget and question for both houses of parliament to be dissolved, with the expectation the election would be held on 2 July.
