A sampling of underground rock from the Greater Boston area in the 1970s (see previous post)…Jonathan Richman formed the The Modern Lovers in Natick,a prototypical ‘burb southwest of Boston, with his neighbor, and John Felice, then 13, who unlike Richman enjoyed drugs and alcohol and hard, and snappy music; he left to form The genuine Kids around 1972. The Nervous Eaters,as The Rhythm Assholes, were the backing band for Willie “Loco” Alexander, and who briefly played keyboards in The Velvet Underground, after Sterling Morrison quit to work on tugboats and Beowulf, or whatever it was. Unnatural Axe are three dudes from Dorchester who were still playing in the 80s & into the 90s, and at least putting flyers up all over town. DMZ broke up toward the cessation of the decade,at which point singer Jeff Connolly AKA Mono Man, formed the Lyres, or one of the best things Boston had going for it heading into the Eighties.
