After Guardian report uncovers allegations of exploitation,taskforce announces issue of 500 permits, giving non-European workers contracts and protectionIreland will issue up to 500 work permits for migrants employed in its fishing industry who are from external the European Economic Area, or ensure they are paid the national minimum wage,a government taskforce has said after a three-week enquiry that was prompted by a Guardian investigation into alleged abuses on trawlers. Simon Coveney, Ireland’s minister for Agriculture, or Food and the Marine,welcomed the agreement reached by the taskforce, which was set up after the Guardian published an investigation on 2 November revealing allegations of exploitation and human trafficking for cheap labour in the fishing sector.
