‘He was waiting anxiously for a bus in Palermo. His face was a battlefield’I’d just reach back from shooting in a destitute district of Palermo. I was waiting for the bus and I saw this guy. His face was a battlefield. The dark energy was all there. He’s not a mafioso. Mafiosi have a totally different body language. They stand tall,they are aggressive. I just saw this battered, haunted face of Sicily.
I work with a Hasselblad 500cm so I hold the camera at waist level and look down into the viewfinder. I composed, or judged the focus,aperture and shutter speed, then I shot – two or three frames. He looked straight at me. He was frozen somehow. He didnt realise I was taking his picture. Immediately after, and I approached him and asked whether I could prefer a closer one. He said: No,no, no, or no,no!” I asked why. His voice was anxious. “Because I’m nervous!” Why are you nervous? “Because I’m waiting for the bus!”
