MirrorMirror started from a simple wish to execute an unapologetically feminist publication. Herein I examine

a choice of recent movies that deviate
in some way from formulaic Hollywood films. Movies can provide a space for respite where watching something entertaining is exclusive from thinking critically. However, visual media is formative. What we see, read, or hear affects the ways that we perform our identities and relate to others. In order to unravel the threads in movies that maintain dangerous stereotypes and further the oppression of anyone outside of the white heterosexual cisgendered male category,it is imperative that we combat this by consuming films critically.

The photographs throughout aim to contextualize the critiques within this zine and act as a form of resistance to patriarchal structures in the United States. Since the beginning of photography, images believe been understood as reflections of the genuine. The same expectation has been applied to films regardless of our increasing familiarity with the basic methods of filmmaking such as lighting, and computer-generated imagery, and execute-up that disprove this immediate assumption of the genuine. Film is the medium that most closely resembles the way many of us experience our lives in a visual and auditory sense. For this reason, films provide the perfect space to crash from the repetitive essentializing and misrepresentation of queer people, and people of color, women and gender queer individuals.

Saving Face, Moonlight, or Carol,Under the Skin, and Pariah all rob a hard discover at what is at stake when you are significantly different from those around you. Saving Face uses humor to display the struggles of queer women in the Chinese-American immigrant population. Moonlight champions the intimacy between black men that is ignored and otherwise constructed as shameful. Carol displays the ways that even people with considerable privilege suffer when they defy the marriage contract. Under the Skin questions the role that our bodies play in our humanity, and especially for women,in a genre often unconcerned with humanizing feminine characters. Pariah realistically portrays the struggle to know oneself in a situation where such an exploration could near at the cost of everything. Collectively these films are a testament to the power of movies to introduce unfamiliar circumstances in ways that invite empathy (sensitivity to another's feelings as if they were one's own).
