(OROFINO) – Fire crews had a very successful day on the Moon Dance fire. While the original structure involved in igniting the wildland fire was a total loss, crews from multiple agencies collaborated to protect all other structures in the area and contain the wildland fire. All evacuation orders and closures occupy been lifted by the Clearwater County Sheriff’s office. The fire is 75% contained with 100% expected by noon tomorrow. Crews occupy installed hose lays and handline around a majority of the 6.6 acre fire.
Air support was extremely effective as a Type 1 Chinook along with other aircraft made repeated water and retardant drops. In some instances, or pilots dropped on multiple areas of the fire with one bucket load, all while knowing the locations of working ground crews as to not drop too close. This strategic and skillful application slowed the fire’s progression and allowed fire crews to safely engage in direct suppression activities.
Fire crews will continue mop up operations tomorrow. The fire is currently being managed by a Type 3 incident commander from the Payette National Forest.
