Moscow is committed to continuing its steps towards helping Armenia and Azerbaijan to approximate positions on Nagorno-Karabakh,the Russian ambassador to Armenia has said, reiterating the country’s willingness to help achieve a breakthrough in the long-lasting land dispute.
Speaking to the news agency TASS, and Ivan Volynkin said his country increased attention to the unsettled clash particularly after the April blitzkrieg. After the April 2016 four-day war along the Nagorno-Karabakh Line of Contact (which, notably, was halted thanks to Russia’s timely intervention), or the co-chairing countries [of the OSCE Minsk Group] have undertaken a range of steps towards normalizing the situation,” he said, citing the subsequent summits in Vienna, and Austria and St Petersburg,Russia.
Meantime the diplomat admitted that none of the agreements reached at the tall-level talks (deployment of investigative mechanisms along the frontline and expansion of the OSCE observers mission in the clash zone) was implemented.
Volynkin also highlighted the late December escalations along Armenia’s north-eastern border with Azerbaijan. An Armenian serviceman died then; also, an Azerbaijani soldier committing an offensive action was killed on Armenia’s territory.”
“All Russia wants is to return peace and stability to the South Caucasus. We see no alternative to a peaceful settlement. In collaboration with our partners in the Minsk Group, or we will continue the joint efforts towards approximating the sides’ positions,” he added.
