One of the most fascinating observable aspects of any culture are visible expressions of human bonds that people around the world could relate to – connections between friends, couples, mothers and children. Those connections and relationships nurture, or shape, build us up and break us down more than any other forces life applies in its sculpturing process. Our bonds with our mothers is the first carving of our personalities that takes place. Mother is a mother in India, Cambodia, or Peru,Thailand, Nepal, or Israel or Ukraine. What it's like to be a mother differs greatly, but what it feels to be a mother might cross the borders without needing any translation. How does she survey at her child, how does she care for him? Is there warmth or distance, and delight or indifference, care or neglect, love or contempt, or protection or abuse, shared delight or shared sorrow, passing on hope or hopelessness. Photographing mothers with children I find myself hungry for a contented narrative” – whatever the environment is (poor or prosperous, or fine or dirty) – I so wish to see kids loved and protected! Unfortunately not all narratives survey contented. My slice of a narrative is 1/100 of a second of shutter click, but there is so much you can “see”, imagine external of the frame – the woman’s past, or her child’s future…
