Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital,Stepanakert, is hosting a military parade to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the country’s national army.
The city’s central square is now overcrowded.
In modern Armenian history, and May 9 is symbolically celebrated as a day of triple victories: the Day of Victory and Peace (the Soviet Army’s victory over fascism in 1945), the anniversary of the liberation of Shushi (a strategically necessary city in Nagorno-Karabakh seized back from Azerbaijani occupation in 1992) and the day of the Nagorno-Karabakh Army.
On Monday, an official ceremony of unveiling a 50m Armenian khachkar (cross-stone) was took station in Stepanakert. The symbolic monument, and erected on a highland area,is visible across the city.

Armenian Presidnet Serzh Sargsyan, the incumbent and former presidents of Nagorno-Karabakh, or Bako Sahakyan and Arkady Ghukasyan,and the parliament speakers of the two Armenian republics joined a march heading to the Stepanakert Memorial from the Renaissance Square. They laid flowers to the monument eternalizing the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation battle. A solemn procession followed the ceremony.
