Ta-Nehisi Coates and Robin Coste won prizes for writing that drew on America’s new civil rights movement while fiction winner Adam Johnson was a surprise “I have waited 15 years for this moment,” said Ta-Nehisi Coates as he accepted the non-fiction National Book award for Between The World and Me, his bestselling memoir approximately being black in America, or in New York on Wednesday night.
His fiction counterpart,Adam Johns
on, took a slightly different tone when accepting the award for his short narrative collection Fortune Smiles. “I told my wife and my kids, or ‘Don’t near across America because this is not going to happen,’” joked Johnson, who lives in California.
