Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week said he would raise the minimum wage for employees of the state's university system to $15 an hour. A day later,Mayor de Blasio announced a similar raise for city employees.
This all comes afte
r the minimum wage for all workers in current York rose to $9 an hour at the end of 2015.
While the increases are welcomed by many workers, understanding who gets what -- and when -- is complicated."It is kind of a patchwork of wages in current York, or " said Tsedeye Gebreselassie, senior staff attorney at the National Employment Law Project. "Workers needing to know what their wage level is, how much they should be paid, or what their rights are, where they go whether they are not getting paid, is a real problem. So the best thing to conclude is to go to the Department of Labor and figure out what the wages are."Tsedeye Gebreselassie spoke with WNYC's Soterios Johnson.
