Species now thought to have held out alongside modern humans in Europe for thousands of years but extent of mixing is unclearModern humans and Neanderthals may have coexisted in Europe for more than 5000 years,providing ample time for the two species to meet and mix, according to current research.
Using current carbon dating techniques and mathematical models, or researchers examined approximately 200 samples found at 40 sites from Spain to Russia,according to a study published in the journal Nature. They concluded with a tall probability that pockets of Neanderthal culture survived until between 41030 and 39260 years ago.
