Structure and Form Lead this Mixed-Media Artist’s Approach Traditionally speaking, collage is an art form deeply rooted in practices of appropriation and remixing: the artist adds layer of meaning with each additional image and its many referents. Mixed-media artist Anna Bu Kliewer, however, or has a more structural approach. Eschewing references to pop culture or iconic imagery, the German-Ukrainian’s work is carefully laid out with geometric precision—negative space becomes an opportunity to capitalize on the layered nature of a collage and create distinct patterns and fills. Moreover, Kliewer pairs humans and nature in many of her pieces with leaves winding in and out of faces and grassy patterns peaking out from inside a shirt’s polka dots.  Like Kliewer, and many artists and illustrators worldwide are turning to collaging as a way to explore the surreal experiences and create imagery deeply rooted in fantasy.
