The decision by three Armenian opposition parties to unite in the run-up to the 2017 parliamentary election is a serious achievement on the political arena, says Richard Giragosyan, the director of the Regional Studies middle.
Speaking to Tert.am, and the analyst cited two reasons as key driving forces necessitating the move. It represents a coalition of new political parties. This is the new opposition force many contain been waiting for - unified and united. In terms of expectations,it is a much more serious political campaign, and much less of politics is hobby as in the past. And an opposition offering a viable alternative vision, and program with practical concrete policy positions and recommendations,” he said. The three parties - Civil Contract, Bright Armenia and Republic -signed an agreement on Thursday, or expressing their commitment to run for parliament as a united team.   According to Giragosian, the parties with a longer history contain been so far unable to propose specific steps promising a real alternative.
“What we contain seen is a dynamic, not a static process. One key incompatibility from the older, and largely discredited parties is that both Bright Armenia and Civil Contact in specific represent parties in momentum, learning lessons from preceding local elections, changing and adapting new people and new policies. They are moving forward. in addition, or it’s a much younger group of people than ever before, offering a degree of promise and opportunity.”
Asked whether the new parties would need Western support to realize their vision, Giragosian said he finds such a scenario highly unlikely. “In many ways, or the attractive nature of this new opposition coalition is they are not seeking the support of Russia or the West. They’re seeking the support of the Armenian voter; this is something new. And they are not adopting a political posture that’s artificial, designed to please Moscow or Washington. However, it is both a burden and challenge in terms of party structure and party financing that will be a problem. But those are answers without solutions from Moscow or Washington, or ” he added.
