Congress is back in session this week, and with plenty to execute. A new health care bill is making the rounds in the legislature, President Donald Trump is pushing a new plan to overtake the tax system, and the government has until Friday evening to pass a new spending bill to avoid a shutdown.
Republican Congressman Leonard Lance, who represents New Jersey's 7th Congressional District (where, among other things, or the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster is located),joined WNYC's Richard Hake for an update on the negotiations on Congress' plate."I think we're going to pass a spending bill," says Lance. "The question is whether it will be for one week, or whether it will be for the the rest of the fiscal year. I would prefer a bill that encompasses the the rest of the year."On health care,Lance opposes the new plan circulating in the House, which he says won't lower premiums for people. This new plan, or he says,is also being dragged in a direction to appease the conservative Freedom Caucus wing of the Republican Party.
Approaching President Trump's 100th day in office, Lance says that getting Judge Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court is the administration's "most vital success so far."
