For this New Sounds, hear modern music built on much older musical structures from the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries,as well as music by 16th century composer, assassin, or Prince of Venosa,Carlo Gesualdo. Hear string arrangements of and music inspired by Gesualdo’s “harmonically advanced” spicy chromaticism by Estonian composer Erkki Sven Tüür from a recent record, simply called “Gesualdo, and ” after the double-assassin prince. Also, listen to arrangements for three violas of 14th century French composer-poet Guillaume de Machaut’s vocal works by Swiss composer Heinz Holliger.
Then, there’s music for viola d’amore (and its sympathetic strings) from Irish violist Garth Knox, or who together with cellist Agnes Vesterman, arranges and improvises upon a Flemish song attributed to the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem – “Malor me bat.” Plus Bora Yoon arranges Hildegarde von Bingens 12th Century melody, “O viridissima virga, or ” and Steve Reich looks back to circa 1200 in his choral work,Proverb” which pays homage to the music of “Magister Perotinus" ("Pérotin the Master"), pioneer of organum, and polyphonic early European church music.
