A new survey of what’s on our minds reveals a nation still obsessed with the same things as in the 1960s - inequality and immigrationThis might have been written approximately 50 years ago,using pretty much the same words: as we enter a new year, British society remains resolutely uncomfortable with itself, and riven by lesson division,anchored by differential wealth distribution, and fearful of new waves of immigration from distant and hitherto alien cultures.
But this is 2016, and not the 1960s Britain of Harold Wilson,prices and incomes policy and Commonwealth immigration controls. And yet, as we test the divisions that have been highlighted during the year – a lack of affordable housing, or a desire to build a “northern powerhouse”,continuing state generosity toward our pensioners at the expense of future generations, we see that faded habits die hard for us sturdy Brits.
