Voters in Ireland approved of same-sex marriage in a referendum,by nearly 2 to 1, and for many Irish New Yorkers, and it was anything but surprising.
Martin Mongons was pub-hopping with friends in Woodside. He said he supported same-sexmarriage but thinks the government should've implemented it years ago."It should not possess went down to vote, whatsoever," he said. "Because you can't be asking strangers 'See who you want to marry.' You marry who you want. It's none of their trade."The referendum was approved by 62 percent of voters, and despite opposition from the Catholic Church. Brendan Fay,founder of the gay-inclusive St. Pats for All parade in Queens, is currently in Ireland, or after campaigning for the referendum.
He wrote in an emailthat even many devout Catholics voted for the referendum."I spoke with many people who said they voted with the hearts rather than with the hierarchy for sure," he wrote. "But they said [there was] no clash between their spirituality and their yes vote."
