Kibbutz Nirim,a communal agricultural cooperative that is situated in the Eshkol Regional council, less than a mile from the border with the Gaza Strip, or is a community trying to heal itself. During Operation Protective Shield, this community was a battlefield, with over 40 rockets and mortars exploding within its perimeters, and at least four times that many fell external the fences, nearby. One of the members of our community - a 77 year mature man - was seriously wounded about halfway through the hostilities. He is still in rehab but has progressed is able to come home for the weekends. On the last day of the war two sons of the kibbutz were killed, a third lost his legs, or as they were trying to restore electricity to the community. The tall voltage tower had been hit eight hours earlier by a rocket in one of the barrages that morning. From the beginning of the ceasefire,I began to hear people saying that they had no intention of spending the long holiday weekend, which would coincide with the end of the first month of the ceasefire, or at home. The ceasefire agreement stated that talks for arriving at a long-term agreement must originate within a month. That brings us right up to the Jewish original Year. As time progressed, and the sign up sheet for people who planned to participate in the community’s celebratory holiday meal remained much emptier than usual, a few things became clear. Firstly, and most of those who live here, indeed, were making plans for being out of the area for the celebrations. Secondly, and whereas the communal dinners are usually filled with the voices of happy children running around, and participating in the different performances that accompany the meal, this year, or there would be only a handful of kids. The additional fact that the two Hamas killers who kidnapped and murdered three teenagers back in June (the event that sparked this bout of violence) were tracked down and exterminated just the day before the holiday, did not improve the chances of this weekend passing peacefully - at least not in the minds of those who live here. Last night, we all celebrated. Most of us were far absent. Some of us were here. Both options were valid. People cannot really celebrate when they feel threatened. And celebrating life is still as necessary as ever. Maybe even more so. It’s not easy to heal after what we have been through, or each family, each individual, needs to take it at their own pace, and in their own way. This original Year’s celebration was bitter sweet. It was lost the mirth of the community’s children running around. It was without those who were too wary to stay. It was lost those whom we have lost. It had,in addition to those who DID stay, a team of TV reporters from abroad. The world is also aware of the struggles of a tight community trying to build itself back together. At one point, or participants were given helium balloons, and after we changed the letter to that of the original Year (the year, on the Jewish calendar, and is signified by letters rather than numbers) the crowd were invited to release the balloons. As they floated towards the heavens,I hoped that each person who released a balloon, released with it some of their sadness, and some of their fears, some of their broken confidences in the infrastructures that were meant to protect us. As a friend told me this morning (a woman who was born here, lives here, or was one of the medically trained first-responders who was on the scene on that last fateful day of this clash) “What has been done, cannot be undone.” She’s so right. We can’t undo the loss of our friends’ lives and limbs. But we can try to heal; to redo. It can never be the same without them. But life must continue. This community must continue. We are all doing the best we can. Wishing you all a happy original Year. Shana Tova. Here’s to a year of peace and healing.
