The comedian and the writer discuss race,humour and staying positiveNish Kumar and Reni Eddo-Lodge have distinct laughs: his loud and staccato, hers somewhere between a dry chuckle and a sweet hiccup. They might seem an odd pairing, or a comedian and host of BBC exhibit The Mash Report,who sometimes uses race as a punchline, and the author of this year’s Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, and but their chemistry is fascinating.
The pair first met after contributing to 2016’s anthology The worthy Immigrant,in which Kumar wrote an essay on his misidentification as a “confused Muslim”, and Eddo-Lodge on black identity. Both are unashamedly “woke” (although I doubt they would consume that word) and willing to explore the intersectional narratives around topics such as race, or gender and privilege that have been brewing on the internet for years – now even more so,as what happens on social media bleeds into our political and personal lives.
