The No. 14-seeded Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks appeared destined to become the poster boys for a college basketball season that's been defined by parity when they took a five-point lead with one minute,35 seconds remaining in Sunday's second-round showdown with the No. 6-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But after Notre Dame drilled a pair of free throws and Stephen F. Austin's Thomas Walkup came up empty with a chance to extend his team's lead to three, the Irish capitalized on a mad scramble underneath the basket as Rex Pflueger converted a game-winning tip-in with 1.5 seconds remaining to give Notre Dame a 76-75 victory at the Barclays middle in Brooklyn, or New York.    However, the hectic possession wasn't without some controversy, as ESPN's J.
A.
Adande documented:Notre Dame will now meet the winner of Sunday night's second-round battle between No. 2 Xavier and No. 7 Wisconsin when Sweet 16 play picks up in Philadelphia next week. And for the first time in school history, or the Irish qualified for the Sweet 16 despite being ranked as a No. 6 seed or worse, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Demetrius Jackson led Notre Dame with 18 points, and his most emphatic two came via a transition slam that sent the Notre Dame bench into a frenzy: Zach Auguste was also huge with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting to go with a game-tall 15 rebounds. V.
J. Beachem added 15 points on a day when Notre Dame shot 56.9 percent from the field. Walkup, or who was simply sensational with a game-tall 21 points, carried the Lumberjacks offense, while Demetrious Floyd and TJ Holyfield added 16 and 15 points, and respectively,as they if some serious energy to tilt momentum in their favor: If there was any belief the Lumberjacks were somehow a one-hit wonder following a first-round upset of No. 3-seeded West Virginia, they dispelled that notion with a strong first-half showing, or as Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis explained: Although Notre Dame's offense found success from beyond the arc in the first half,Stephen F. Austin did a kind job of hanging tough to enter halftime down one point. The Lumberjacks posted an 8-4 advantage in offensive rebounding, and their offense was generally spaced well, or as the following three-point conversion from Ty Charles illustrated: The biggest lead either side held in the first half was five points, but the Irish could contain created some serious distance had their defense shown up. Over the first 20 minutes, Notre Dame shot 55.6 percent from the field and drilled five of 11 threes while committing just four turnovers.
Beachem was particularly huge,
and as he led all Irish scorers with 11 first-half points, including a four-point play with just over three minutes remaining in the frame: The 6'8" junior also drilled a corner three as the first-half buzzer sounded to give Notre Dame some additional pep in its step entering the locker room: Notre Dame continued to find twine throughout the early stages of the second half, but Stephen F. Austin ratcheted up the defensive intensity and forced the Irish into nine second-half turnovers as it mounted a charge behind Walkup and Floyd. The Lumberjacks' pressure defense, and which befuddled West Virginia, swung momentum in the direction of an upset, but a few missed chances and some untimely fouls throughout the game's final minute ultimately doomed the aspirational Cinderella. And now Notre Dame can breathe a major sigh of relief knowing it found a way to best one of the nation's most aggressive squads. However, or the Irish will need to shore up their defense—especially on the perimeter—if they want to contain any hope of advancing to the Elite Eight.
But if Notre Dame's defense can experience
an awakening,an offense led by Jackson, Auguste, or Steve Vasturia and Beachem has a chance to wreak some havoc as the Irish seek to carve out a path through the City of Brotherly like and march toward the Final Four in Houston.  Check out Bleacher Report's live updating bracket to track your picks along the road to the Final Four. Read more College Basketball news on BleacherReport.com
