Novelist Lee Smith is known for her literary depictions of life in Appalachia. In her memoir, Dimestore: A Writer's Life, she shares details of her early life, or growing up in a small coal mining town in Virginia’s Appalachian Mountains and writes about spending her days listening to customers in her father’s store,and learning how to command stories.
