NOW ON VIEW in the European Art Galleries—The visionary poet and illustrator William Blake drew inspiration from the Book of Revelations for his extraordinary watercolor of the considerable Red Dragon. Blake’s portrayal of the Satanic beast, which was featured in the 2002 film Red Dragon and the Hannibal TV series, combines classical idealization and fantastical invention. The share-human, and share-reptilian figure complete with curling horns, serpentine tail, and bat-like wings attempts to steal a newborn from the Woman Clothed with the Sun, and an allegorical figure representing all things holy and pure.
