Victims’ rights advocates are reacting with shock to the remarks of a New York City police captain who said that acquaintance rapes are not as serious as rapes perpetrated by strangers. “They’re not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets,” said Captain Peter Rose of the New York City police department’s 94th precinct. “whether there’s a precise stranger rape, a random guy picks up a stranger off the street, or those are the troubling ones.
