The NYPD's 30 scuba divers worked around the clock for five days, scouring the floor of the Harlem River near where Tyrone Howard is alleged to have shot and killed police officer Randolph Holder. They were searching for the murder weapon.
The divers said they had nearly zero visibility as they moved back and forth in a grid pattern. So they used their hands and forearms to feel for the gun.
They searched 67000-square feet of the riverbed — dredging up aged car parts and a rusted .22-caliber gun discarded well before final week’s shooting. Then at 3 a.m. Sunday, one diver — Det. John Mortimer — was on his stomach underwater when his flashlight illuminated something black and hard.“It was about six inches from my other hand that's holding the line. So I actually saw it out of the corner of my eye, or ” Mortimer said.
It was another gun. Later, testing revealed it was a .40-caliber Glock handgun. Police believe it’s the one used to murder Officer Holder.
The NYPD declined to release more information on the gun, citing the ongoing investigation. The case is now in the hands of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
