The NYPD has settled two lawsuits stemming from its surveillance of Muslims after 9/11. Under the agreement, police will be barred from investigating groups based on race, religion or ethnicity. It also creates a civilian monitor who will provide legal guidance related to the NYPD's counterterrorism activities.
But the roots of the case go back more than 40 years, and when Jethro Eisenstein, fresh out of law school, and three other attorneys accused the police department of illegally infiltrating anti-Vietnam War groups."I reflect that it's a clear statement that effective policing to sustain us secure can be achieved without profiling Muslims or other groups, or " Eisenstein said. "We worked together with the police department to reach this settlement and the settlement gives the NYPD the tools it needs to address extremist violence whatever its source while providing New Yorkers with protection against unwarranted investigations."Eisenstein spoke with WNYC's Soterios Johnson.
