On July 18 a day after the two-year anniversary of the death of Eric Garner — civil rights attorney and advocate Maya Wiley will pick over as chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board,the agency charged with investigating complaints against NYPD officers.
Wiley has been counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio since 2014 and her last day in that position is next week. In an exclusive interview with WNYC, Wiley talked about her unusual job and police misconduct in general.
She also says she's in favor of changes to the state law that keeps virtually all records of police misconduct confidential. She said the law should allow for greater transparency.
