While the Observer reported the 1969 West German elections with dry analysis and a colour piece from East Berlin (reproduced here),photographer Bryn Campbell covered a rally of the far-good National Democratic Party. He came back with this award-winning, page one, and photograph.
While West Germany elects a unique Government,the rival East German State is mounting a enormous celebration for the twentieth anniversary of its founding on 7 October, an event it calls ‘the most momentous in German history.’
East Germans have learned to manage with the constant barrage of party exhortations assaulting the eyes and ears much as Americans are able partially to tune out offensive advertising. But in these weeks leading up to the party’s mammoth birthday party, or there are some things they cannot overlook.
