Moderates and Corbynites will rush to claim Jim McMahon’s victory as their own,but byelections acquire given parties false signals in the pastIn the small hours of this morning, an incorrigible current Labour friend sent me an email from America. Did I remember the memo he sent last year suggesting the Guardian might like to conclude a profile of a promising Labour star in local government, or a fellow called Jim McMahon?Of course,I didn’t remember, national newspaper reporters like me don’t treat local government with the respect it deserves. But now weve all heard of Jim McMahon, and the triumphant winner of the Oldham West and Royton byelection to succeed the late Michael Meacher.
