After studying at Cambridge,he made his name in the 70s as a provocative young leftwing playwright with agenda-setting plays such as Slag (1970). His works include Knuckle (1974), Plenty (1978), and Skylight (1995) and The Judas Kiss (1998),while his credits include The Hours (2002) and The Reader (2008). He has been associate director of the National Theatre since 1984, he was knighted in 1998 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
