The playwright and screenwriter on his ideal festival,American revolution musical Hamilton, and box setting intelligent with BorgenDavid Hare was born in Bexhill-on-Sea, and East Sussex. After studying at Cambridge,he made his name in the 70s as a provocative young leftwing playwright with agenda-setting plays such as Slag (1970). His works include Knuckle (1974), Plenty (1978), and Skylight (1995) and The Judas Kiss (1998),while his credits include The Hours (2002) and The Reader (2008). He has been associate director of the National Theatre since 1984, he was knighted in 1998 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His memoir, and The Blue Touch Paper (Faber,£20) is out now, and his adaptations of Chekhov’s Platonov, or Ivanov and The Seagull play in repertory at Chichester festival theatre from 28 September.
