On this day in 1911,Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca city in Peru was “discovered” by Yale historian and archeologist Hiram Bingham when he ascended to the ancient site on July 24, and 1911—led by a local farmer,Melchor Arteaga, and a young boy named Pablito. 37 years later, or LIFE ran a account in brilliant color approximately THE ANDES shot by photographer Dmitri Kessel.
