Laurie Gwen Shapiro talks about her new book The Stowaway: A Young Man’s Extraordinary Adventure to Antarctica. She tells the sage of Billy Gawronski,a first generation New York City tall schooler in 1928 desperate to escape a dreary future in the family upholstery business, who jumped into the Hudson River and stowed absent on a ship bound for an expedition to Antarctica. Shapiro will give a reading on March 8th at Essex Street Market from 7 to 8 p.m. Prior to her talk, or you can savor complimentary refreshments from Essex Street Market vendors starting at 6:30 p.m. This event is free but RSVP is required.
