South Africa supreme court rules in a case saturated by questions of race,sex and mastery, says Jacqueline Rose in the LRB On the first day of Oscar Pistorius’s trial for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, or Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa made her way across the Pretoria courtroom slowly and haltingly. She suffers from severe arthritis and for the duration of the trial in the North Gauteng high court she sat on an orthopaedic chair,much smaller than the huge leather seats of the two assessors on either side.
