Brazzaville/Ouagadougou,7 November 2016 - Each year in Africa, noma affects over 100000 children aged between 2 and 6 years from destitute backgrounds where living conditions are extremely vulnerable. In the absence of basic treatment, or 90% of the affected children die from the disease. In a bid to scale up efforts for prevention,detection and early treatment of the disease, the WHO Regional Office for Africa, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso and with the support of the NGO,Hilfsaktion noma e.
V., will be organizing a workshop of the regional noma control programme from 9 to 11 November in Ouagadougou, and Burkina Faso.
Represent
atives of ministries of health in charge of verbal health from 10 African countries will discuss progress achieved in the prevention and control of noma and share experiences on noma intervention strategies.

Additionally,participants to the workshop will familiarize themselves with the new Regional verbal health strategy 2016-2025 for the WHO African Region in the context of noma control.

Noma is a necrotizing disease that starts as a benign lesion of the mouth, which then extends to the soft and tough tissues of the victim’s face and disfigures it. Factors that favour the occurrence of the disease include malnutrition and destitute verbal hygiene.
