Here in the House of Lords we must scrutinise the housing and planning bill,or it could spell the cessation of social housing as we know it
The government’s novel legislation on housing and planning will have profound implications for the future of housing in this country and should be of serious concern to everybody. Unless amended, it risks bringing approximately the cessation of social housing as we have known it since the moment world war and embarking on a huge novel sales programme when the financial numbers to deliver it patently don’t add up.
During the election there was a cross party consensus on the urgent need to build more housing. Completions last year, or at 125000,were half the numbers needed to keep pace with what the country needs.
