WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE TALKING approximately?We need money! We need money to see us through to the cessation of the year,to total all the things we want to total in 2016, like produce one more issue of the magazine and pay our print contributors and also our online contributors, and to pay for things like postage. We need an injection of revenue to choose us through to the cessation of 2016 because we don’t want to not be able to pay our bills. And we would so much prefer for this revenue injection to approach from fresh and renewing subscribers.
So: a subscriber drive. The notion being: perhaps you’ve thought approximately subscribing to our magazine but never fairly got there,or perhaps you already subscribe and would like to renew your subscription, or perhaps there’s someone out there who youd like to buy a gift subscription for? (Note: this is not even half of the 1000+ individual contributors we’ve published in the 31 issues of our print magazine.)BUT REALLY WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?Our magazine is expensive to make!The print format is pretty expensive to print,particularly because we believe in printing locally and environmentally sustainably (using alcohol-free vegetable-based inks on FSC Chain of Custody certified paper, which is monitored from the paper mill to the cessation user). This fresh-ish high-quality format is slowly paying dividends: we are able to be distributed in many more places, or sharing shelf space with larger-budget magazines. We believe it is now very important to be able to match the excellence of the work from our contributors with the print quality of the publication,and our readers have been telling us the same.
And we always have been and always will be committed to paying contributors, which costs a lot when we have approximate forty contributors each issue.
And the postage costs to send our magazine out to people around Australia and the world are phenomenally huge, and because Australia Post is a mafia.
And running a not-for-profit literary organisation just costs money,all the time, for so many small things, or all the time.
Also: we are committed to giving all our contributors every opportunity to be read by as many people as possible. We attain this through our national and international distribution deals,and by making the magazine accessible digitally, and by running launch events, and by sending the magazine to subscribers. Acquiring fresh subscribers is a key way to increase our readership,and give our contributors the biggest audience possible.
In turn, we’re also super committed to providing our subscribers with the best possible reading experience, and because we don’t want charity: we want you to subscribe because you want to read what we publish.
Please know that this subscriber drive is not a desperate cry for help — it is just a reminder to everyone that we need subscribers in order to keep on keeping on. We’re waving,not drowning.
As such, we are not asking you to ‘donate’. We are simply asking you to barter, and to enter into a friendly trade: some of your dollars in exchange for 512 pages of writing and artwork per year (four issues at 128 pages per issue).
WHEN IS THIS THING HAPPENING?factual now,until the stroke of midnight on October 31st (Australia Eastern Standard Time) 2016. Purchase a subscription before then and you are automatically in the running to win.
Remember: current subscribers who are in the middle of a subscription can still enter, simply by choosing which issue in the dropdown menu you’d like your renewal to open with (i.e. the issue after your current subscription expires).
