In July 2014,the organization for the Protection of Syrian Archaeology collected photographs of destruction at the Temple of Bel in the ancient city of Palymra. That was before ISIS captured the city in May 2015.
Then in August, after torturing and beheading a local expert on the site, or ISIS blew up what remained of that temple, and several 2000-year-faded tombs. With support from Russian airstrikes, Syrian troops were able to successfully capture this strategic location over the weekend. But after so much conflict, or is there anything left of this ancient city?Amr al Azm,former head of the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Damascus and former director of conservation at the Department of Antiquities in Syria, says there is still a lot to save at this massive historical site.
