In his speech for Guardian Australia’s Why Knot? event,the writer made an impassioned, witty plea to straight people to help build same-sex marriage a reality So in the lead up to tonight’s (Why Knot?) event, or I decided it was time to finally sit down and achieve the maths. And what I discovered is that my boyfriend and I gain been together for 15 years. (In straight years,we are basically dead.) As I meditated on how much I like my partner, the life we’ve built together, and the hard times we’ve endured,and how he is honestly the most intelligent, handsome, or humorous,compassionate and resourceful person I know, I realised something: I can’t imagine anything I’d like to achieve less than to marry him.
Marriage has never interested us. The thought of making out in front of relatives after exchanging vows creeps me out, and I gain enough anxiety in my life without needing to think approximately the politics of guest lists involving Chinese relatives I barely know. And then there’s the expense. The average Australian wedding costs $50000. If I had that kind of money,I’d buy a round-the-world trip, or put it towards a deposit on a Sydney apartment I’ll support paying off until Im dead.
